New tenant coming to century-old bank building in downtown Kalamazoo

A new Horizon is coming to downtown Kalamazoo, as part of a vision to provide a variety of attractions and amenities in one corner of downtown.

Horizon Bank is planning to open a new professional office in the Monroe Building located at 151 E. Michigan Ave., according to Treystar, the owner of the property.

Built in 1905, the Monroe Building was originally home to the Kalamazoo City Savings Bank and features a neoclassical exterior with 13,000 square feet of private offices, conference rooms, collaborative space and a kitchen spread throughout two floors and a full basement.

Horizon Bank will occupy nearly 4,000 feet at the street level, property developer and manager Treystar said.

The new location will be Horizon Bank’s second in the Kalamazoo area. Horizon has another location at 3250 W. Centre Ave., in Portage.
The new downtown Kalamazoo office will focus on providing comprehensive commercial and personal banking services, Treystar said.
“Treystar is thrilled to welcome Horizon Bank to the Haymarket Campus,” Treystar Partner Fritz Brown said in a news release.
The Haymarket Plaza, an outdoor space in downtown Kalamazoo, opened in 2021. Since that time, Barrio Tacos + Tequila + Whiskey opened adjacent to the outdoor space, at 215 E. Michigan Ave., and Crafted Copper is planning to open soon nearby with duckpin bowling and self-pour taps.
Crafted Copper is owned by Kzoo Entertainment — a division of Treystar.
